Flow is the quantity of material passing a given area in a unit time period.

Look at the pipe below with water flowing past a given area (the red line).

In this pipe, quantity of 300 mL of water has passed the given area after a time period of one minute.

Saying it in another way, the flow in the above pipe is 300 mL per minute.
