CHAPTER I
Down the Hole
Harry was beginning to get very bored. There was nothing to watch on television and he was tired of his video games. For the tenth time of the day, he checked his email. There wasn't anything there ten minutes ago, but he thought he would check it anyway.

Harry's eyes widened. There was an email. Even better, the email had an attachment. He loved attachments for if they were good, they erased his boredom for a while at least. Harry clicked on the attachment and a mysterious image opened. It was a very strange image indeed. It was full of little black rectangles everywhere.

Yet among the thousand rectangles was a big hole. The hole was VERY mysterious. At times it appeared as if it was nothing more than an image on the screen and at times it appeared to be strangely deep.

And then he heard the voice. It was a voice of a girl. Harry was sure that the volume of the computer was turned all the way down. Before he could figure out from where the voice came from, she spoke again;
‘Jump into the hole.’
Harry looked around but could see no one in the room. It was only himself and the computer. He could feel his heart beat. The voice of the girl came again. It seemed to come from the hole;
'Come on , jump into the hole. It will be fun.'
Harry thought this was all crazy. Who was this girl ? And just when Harry thought it could not get weirder, it did. Harry saw a Rabbit appear out of the hole.
It said,
' You heard what the girl said. Just jump into the hole. You will enjoy the world beyond the hole.'
Harry was a bit convinced but a bit reluctant to jump into the hole. Besides, wondered how can someone as big as himself jump into small hole on the screen.
Harry , feeling a little odd talking to a picture, said,
'Listen Mr. Rabbit, what you say maybe true, but I am a bit nervous about entering the hole.'
'WHAT DID YOU JUST CALL ME ? Did you say I was a Rabbit ! I AM A DUCK ! Haven't you seen a Duck before ?'

The Duck made an angry face and disappeared into the hole. Harry looked at the empty hole and wondered what was deep inside it.

Harry felt bad to have insulted the Duck. It did look a bit like a Rabbit, but nevertheless, Harry felt that it was wrong to have called a Duck a Rabbit. Partly to please the Duck and partly to please his curiosity, Harry decided to test the hole by putting his finger through it. He didn't expect his finger to go through the screen, but it did. It was a strange sight to see half his finger inside the screen. He pushed his finger slightly more into the hole and started to feel a slight tingling sensation at the tip. It was as if a tiny electric current was passing through him.
And then he felt a hand grip his hand. The hand was pulling him into the screen and the hole on the screen was becoming bigger and bigger. The hand was pulling harder and the hole was becoming bigger and bigger. Soon Harry was completely sucked into the hole and he began traveling faster than he could ever imagine. He was moving fast through various tunnels that seemed to never end. Harry was too amazed to be scared. The tunnels turned and twisted all over the place.

And finally with a small bump, Harry landed in a small room. The room was completely empty except for table in the middle. The table was colored a beautiful blue and there was something on it.
CHAPTER II
The Pool of Tears
Harry looked at the table and noticed that there was a plate of something.

It was a nice plate of fish. All the mysterious happenings had made Harry slightly hungry. He wished that there was some bread to eat with the fish. He looked around and found none. In fact, there seemed to be nothing else than the table with the plate of fish on it.

Harry was about to eat the fish when he heard the voice of the girl again,
' Thank you very much for coming to my world. It is very nice of you to have dropped by. I was so lonely.'
Harry was startled by the voice. There was absolutely no one in the room. He looked and looked and asked,
'Who is this ?'
The voice replied,
'I am the one who called you into the hole. I was so lonely. Thank you for coming.'
harry looked around frantically,
'Where are you ? I can't see you anywhere.'
Harry even looked under the table. He couldn't see the girl anywhere at all.
'My name is Alice and I am right in front of you. Can't you see me ?'

And she gave Harry a kiss and winked.
Harry , not knowing what else to do, said,
'Hello Alice, My name is Harry. Where am I ?'
'You are in the world wide web! Right inside it, Welcome.'
Harry was shocked. He had been using the internet for years and always thought it was only a bunch of messages traveling all over the place. He never imagined that it was a 'real place' where one could live in.
Realising that Harry was confused, Alice repeated,
' Yes Harry, you are in the world wide web. For so many years you have used it from the outside. But did you ever wonder who did all work of carrying the messages all over. It is the people who live inside the world wide web who carry all the zillions of packets of messages that go around the world. There are many of us living inside the world wide web. No one from the outside has seen us, except , you of course ! Over the years I have been carrying so many messages from your computer that I have got to know you a bit. I want to show you the world I live in. I can't wait to take you around the world wide web!'

Harry was really excited, but then suddenly thought of home. It seemed to be far away and he felt a pang of desire to return home. He missed the TV and sofa. And he felt a bit hungry too. Not knowing exactly what he wanted, he said,
'Nice meeting you Alice, but I really must get back home. I got things to do at home.'
There was a long silence and then small tears began to form around Alice's eyes. Then one tear fell onto the ground. This was followed by another and another. Soon there was a curtain of tears rolling over Alice's face.

Harry always found these situations difficult. He just kept watching Alice crying, not knowing what to say. She just cried and cried and cried. Soon the floor was filled with tears and Harry thought that if it didn't stop, they would probably both drown in the tears.

Harry did not like the idea of drowning in tears. He thought he better stop Alice crying.
'Okay okay ! I will stay. But you must promise to show me the inside of the world wide web.'
Alice looked up. Words came in between sobbing,
'I promise. I will show you all the interesting places here. You will love it I am sure.'
Through her still wet face, she smiled and gave him another kiss.

Harry was not too used to getting kisses. Certainly not so many in one day. Before she gave him another, Harry spoke,
'Show me how the internet works.'
CHAPTER III
Harry visits the center of the world wide web
‘Are you ready for the journey?’, Alice asked, her face full of excitement.
Harry had forgotten about missing home.
He was ready and said so,
‘Yes I am ready. Wow. I can’t wait to see the secrets of the internet.’
Alice pointed at a small tunnel,
‘You go first. Get into the black tunnel. This is one of the billions of tunnels that workers here use to carry packets of information.'

Harry laughed,
‘How can I get into that tunnel! I am too big.’
Alice did not laugh.
She looked at Harry,
‘Of course you can’t go in like that. You are too big. You first need to imagine that you are becoming smaller. And you will become smaller.’
Harry did not believe her. He did not believe that simply imagining becoming small can actually make someone smaller.
Alice decided to prove to Harry that the mind can make things bigger or smaller. She asked Harry to look at the boy in the red T shirt and the boy in the blue T shirt.
She asked Harry,
‘Which boy is taller … the one in the red T shirt or the one in the blue T shirt ?’
Harry looked very carefully. He knew Alice was trying to teach him something, but he could not figure out what. He looked and looked at the two boys. However much he looked, the boy in the red T shirt was much taller than the boy in the blue T shirt.
After looking for some more time he said,
‘It is obvious Alice, the boy in the blue T shirt is much smaller than the one in the red T shirt.’

Alice giggled,
‘You are wrong. Both boys are equally tall. The boy in the red T shirt is NOT taller than the one in the blue T shirt !’
Harry did not believe it. It could not be. The boy in the red T shirt was MUCH taller than the one in a blue T shirt.
Alice decided to convince Harry,
‘Well I will prove that it is your mind that makes things bigger or smaller.’
She took a piece of paper and marked the height of the boy in the red T shirt.
She then took the same piece of paper and placed it next to the boy in the blue T shirt. To his amazement, Harry realised that both boys were equally tall.

Alice explained,
‘So you see, your mind can change how things look. It made the boy in the blue T shirt smaller. So, using your mind, you can make yourself really small. People working in the world wide web need to become really small and flexible to be able to travel in the tiny tunnels that connect all computers.’
So Harry imagined that he was becoming smaller and smaller. And just as Alice had said, his imagination was actually making him smaller. Soon he was small enough to enter the black tunnel. Alice and Harry jumped into the tunnel, to begin their journey of the world wide web.

CHAPTER IV
Harry meets a 'Packet Man'
Harry and Alice entered the hole. Soon they were zooming inside tunnels which were bending and dividing all over the place. Harry was feeling slightly dizzy, but Alice reassured him that he would soon get used it.

Alice showed Harry the walls of the tunnel they were traveling in,
'Look at those flashing black dots.'

' I don't see any BLACK dots', insisted Harry.
Just to make his point clear, he took a sheet of paper and covered most of the tunnel to prove to Alice there were no black flashing dots,
'Look Alice, there are white dots only. No flashing black dots.'

Alice sighed,
' Of course if you do not imagine flashing black dots, you would not see flashing black dots! So just imagine them and they will appear.'
Harry did not fully understand it all, but decided to imagine flashing black dots. Sure enough, he suddenly started to see plenty of black dots.
Having now seen the flashing black dots whizzing past, Harry was curious as to what they were.
Alice read his mind,
'Those black dots are the millions of 'Packet Men'. They carry the millions of packets of information on the internet to all over the world.'
Alice managed to stop a Packet Man who was passing by. He was a strange looking muscular man.
Alice greeted the Packet man,
'Thank you for stopping by Sir ! I have visitor with me and he has never seen a Packet Man before ! He has used the Internet for years, but has never seen a Packet Man.'
To Harry's annoyance, Alice and the Packet man giggled.

Alice explained to Harry that Packet Men had to be very fit as they had to travel the world carrying heavy packets of information. But that was not all, they had also to be extremely flexible to be able to squeeze through all the tunnels in the internet. Alice begged the Packet Man to demonstrate his flexibility to Harry. Everyone, including the Packet Man, loved Alice and so he obliged to show his skills of being very flexible. He bent over and swallowed himself. Then he 'unbent' himself into himself again.

Alice asked the Packet Man where he was taking the packet he was carrying.
' I am taking it to the Central Sorting Office.'
He offered to take both , Harry and Alice to see the Central Sorting Office.
CHAPTER V
The Central Sorting Office
The Packet Man brought Alice and Harry to the Central Sorting Office. It was a strange and huge and tall building.

The Packet Man explained how every single message on the internet had to go through the Central Sorting Office. It was therefore the busiest place in the whole universe.

Harry was utterly amazed at the activity of the Central Sorting Office. He couldn't imagine how they coped with all the billions and zillions of message packets that passed through it everyday. Alice wanted to know from the Packet Man how sometimes things got lost in the internet.
'You two are very inquisitive indeed. I am very busy, but I will show you the place which causes some things to get lost in the world wide web. Let us go now.'
The Packet Man whisked the two away to show them where things get lost.
CHAPTER VI
The Place Where Things Go Missing
The Packet Man brought Harry and Alice to the place where things get lost forever. They saw the most scary steps they have ever seen in their life. These steps never reached the top. He explained that, if mistakenly, a Packet Man climbed these stairs with a packet, he would never ever reach the top. He would keep trying for years and still never find the end of the steps, and of course the information packets they carry would be lost forever.
Alice asked the Packet Man how one could end up at this terrible place. The Packet Man said that it was the fault of 'Spinning Lucy' at the Central Sorting Office. She was so confused that she sometimes mistakenly sent Packet Men with their messages to the endless steps.
Packet Man called Spinning Lucy to meet Harry and Alice. She came in a hurry and puff. She briefly stopped spinning to say hello to all of them.
The Packet Man explained how Spinning Lucy was always confused. She never knew which way she was spinning. She was never sure if she was spinning clockwise or anticlockwise.

Harry looked at her and said,
' She is spinning ANTI CLOCKWISE.'
But at the same time, Alice was looking at Spinning Lucy and said,
'She is spinning CLOCKWISE.'
They argued about which way she was spinning for hours. Whichever direction Harry thought Spinning Lucy was spinning, Alice always saw her spin the opposite way.
They asked Spinning Lucy about how she ended up spinning in such a weird way. Lucy said it was all due to a toy she and her sister had when they were small. It was a toy spinning wheel. The problem was that when Lucy saw the wheel spinning clockwise , her sister would see it spinning anticlockwise. Then when Lucy saw the wheel spin anticlockwise, at that very moment her sister would see the exact opposite. Sometimes if she looked through one eye, it would spin one way and then spin the other way when she looked through her other eye.

This toy had confused her for years making her spin in a weird way when she grew up.
Spinning Lucy worked in the Central Sorting Office. Unfortunately, all this spinning made her occasionally send Packet Men with their messages to wrong places, some ending up permanently lost in the endless steps. Alice felt sorry for Spinning Lucy and hoped things would get better for her.
Alice wanted to move on. She knew a place in the internet where there was a picture of a very important person. She was very keen to show the picture to Harry.
CHAPTER VII
The Very Important Person
Alice and Harry traveled through the internet tunnels and came to a room with a huge picture hanging on the wall. Alice showed Harry the picture and told him how she thought that the person was really very important. However, she did not know why the person was important. She just felt he was important, and therefore she felt he must be important.
Harry saw the portrait and shouted,
'Gosh ! What an old man.'
'You are so impolite', exclaimed Alice, ' how could you call such a beautiful woman a man ! She would be so offended. '
Alice asked Harry to move back many steps. He did not understand why, but thought it better to listen to what Alice had to say, since she looked so angry. He was now VERY FAR from the picture so that it looked smaller than before. But, when he looked at it again, he saw that the picture actually showed a very beautiful young woman.

CHAPTER VIII
The Slow Machine
Harry wanted to know why his internet connect sometimes got really slow. Alice explained that sometimes information has to go though the 'Slow Machine'. She did not why some messages had to go through this machine, but some just had to. The Slow Machine slowed messages down by making them go through 'slow gears' and 'slow rollers'.
Alice pointed to the slow gears,
'Look at the gears. See how slowly they move'.

Harry was not convinced that they were moving at all. He put a piece of paper across the gears,
'Alice, these gears are not moving at all. See they don't cross the edge of the paper.'

Alice took the paper away,
'Just imagine that they are moving, and you will see them slowly moving. You can't expect 'slow gears' to move fast !'
Harry looked at the images and imagined them move slowly. And yes , saw the slow gears turn slowly.

They then looked at the 'slow rollers'.
Again, Harry was not convinced that the rollers were moving, and he put a piece of paper to prove it to Alice.

She was furious,
'IMAGINE that they are moving you silly boy ! Nothing in this world will work if you don't imagine anything.'
Harry quickly took the paper away, slightly trembling with fear. Perhaps he was so afraid, he actually imagined harder, and he saw the rollers move quite well.

CHAPTER IX
Kikki and Booba
Alice introduced some of her friends to Harry,
'Meet my friends Harry. One is Kikki and the other is Booba.'

Harry whispered into Alice's ear,
'That wasn't very helpful was it. Which one is which? Which one is Kikki and which one is Booba?'
Alice whispered back,
'EVERONE knows which one is Kikki and which one is Booba. The whole universe knows which one is which.'
Alice continued, but forgetting to whisper,
'Just imagine which one is Kikki and imagine which one is Booba. Ninety nine point nine percent people in the universe guess which one is Kikki and which one is Booba correctly. Try and imagine which one is which, I will tell you if you were correct. .'
Harry was not convinced that he could imagine who was who. But he had no choice, and looked at Alice's friends and imagined which one was Kikki and which one was Booba.

Harry then looked at the spiky looking friend of Alice's,
'Can you tell me your name please.? Alice is not telling me if you are Kikki or Booba.'

'I am Kikki. My purple friend here is Booba.'

Harry was relieved that he knew who was who. Kikki and Booba loved to show magic tricks. They wanted try a trick on Alice. They shuffled a pack of cards and put a row on a table.
Kikki looked at Alice in the eye,
' I can read minds you know. Look at these cards. In your MIND, select one card. Do not touch the cards, just think of one of them. I will be able to later show you that I know which card you thought of.'
Booba reminded Alice to remember the card she has chosen.
CHAPTER X
Alice shows them the Biggest Mystery
Kikki thought deep and hard. Booba suppressed a small giggle. And magically , Kikki removed the card that Alice had been thinking about.

Alice looked at the remaining cards on the table. Somehow, Kikki had known which card she was thinking about and had removed it from the row of cards. The card she had thought of was no longer there.
Harry was impressed , but NOT THAT impressed. He knew of even a better trick and thought he would try it out on Kikki and Booba. He asked Booba to look at a chess board. It looked like an ordinary chess board, except that one square was marked with an A and another square was marked with a B.
He asked Booba,
'Let me ask you a simple question. Which square is darker, square A or square B.'
Booba looked carefully, for she knew that the question was not as simple as it seemed. But however much she looked, it seemed obvious: Square A was darker than square B.

Booba and Kikki had a good look. It was obvious, and they answered together,
'Obviously Harry, square A is darker than square B.'
Harry laughed out loud,
' Of course both of you are wrong. Super wrong ! In reality, both square A and square B are equally dark. Square A is NOT darker.'
Booba and Kikki looked again at the chess board for many minutes. They were in no doubt,
' This is a silly trick. Square A is darker than square B. You will have to prove it to us that things are otherwise if you want us to believe you.'
Harry was ready for this request. He put a piece of paper on the chess board and marked little circles where the two squares were.

Harry then tore the paper where the marks were and made two small holes. He placed the paper with holes over the chess board so that one hole showed square A and the other hole showed square B. He invited Booba , Kikki and even Alice to look at the paper. They were all amazed and gasped. The holes showed that both squares were indeed exactly the same shade of grey. Square A was not even a tiny bit darker than square B !

As there they were marveling at the mystery squares, suddenly they could hear an elephant trumpeting in the distance. Harry and Alice decided to investigate. They wished their friends farewell and jumped into a tunnel to go wherever the sound was coming from.
CHAPTER XI
The Zoo
Harry and Alice arrived at a zoo ! The zoo was hidden by a jungle full of moving leaves.

With difficulty, they managed to move away the moving leaves and arrived at the side of a roaring river.
To get to the zoo, they had to cross a river which was full of floating logs.
Alice was terrified,
'Let us not visit this zoo. I am too scared to cross moving logs, we might fall into the river !'

Harry reassured Alice,
'But Alice, they are not moving. Do not worry. But if you are still worried, just keep your finger on one of the logs.'
Alice put one of her fingers on one of the logs. Harry was right. The logs did not move under her finger. The logs only appeared to move, and were not actually moving. With her fear gone, she held Harry's hand and crossed the river by walking over a log.
Once they safely reached the other side, they saw a variety of animals, including the elephant whose trumpeting they had heard from far.

Something made Alice feel sad about the elephant. He did not look too happy being stuck in this zoo.
Alice held his trunk and asked,
'Mr. Elephant, why are you stuck in this zoo ? Wouldn't you like to roam free in the world wide web ?'
No one had ever asked the elephant that question before, but he was happy that at least someone finally did,
' The reason I am stuck in this zoo is because I cannot remember how many legs I have. Without knowing that, I cannot walk far and wide in the world wide web. Small elephantine tears rolled down his eyes. Perhaps the two of you can tell me how many legs I have and I will be able to walk again.'

Harry said,
'You've got five legs.'
At the same time Alice said,
'You've got four legs.'
Alice and Harry began to argue about the number of legs the elephant had.
The elephant started to cry even more,
'I will never be able to walk again.'
Then Alice had a bright idea and she went up to the elephant,
'Mr Elephant, I have the correct answer for you.'
The elephant wiped his tears using his massive trunk and listened.
Alice stood on a stool and spoke to him near his ear,
'You just have to imagine that you have four legs, then you will actually have four legs. Whatever you imagine, that will be the truth.'
The elephant was not very convinced, but thought he would try it anyway. Using his big brain , he imagined that he had four big legs.
Then he carefully tried to walk, and sure enough, he could walk well. He put up his trunk and trumpeted hard. Thanking Harry and Alice, he walked away from the zoo to explore the world wide web.
Alice walked past a frog. The frog croaked to get Alice's attention and made a remarkable offer,
'Kiss me and I will turn into an handsome horse !'
Alice did not believe the frog, but since she always had wanted to be a Princess, she kissed the frog (this seemed to make Harry a little jealous).

Alice kissed the horse, making Harry even a bit more jealous. And then out of the blue, appeared a rabbit.
CHAPTER XII
This is Not the End
'Hello Alice and Harry.'

Harry was very surprised,
'How did you know my name ?'
The Rabbit hopped around,
'My friend, the Duck , told me all about you. He said that he persuaded you to jump into the world wide web. I heard that you were very scared of entering our world. Aren't you glad you came ?'
Alice listened to the Rabbit explain how the Duck had managed to persuade Harry to jump into the hole. And then Alice got the courage to say something,
' I wish I could visit the real world that lies outside the world wide web. Oh how I wish I could visit all those things I have heard about.
The Rabbit stopped hopping about,
'Well you could visit the world out there. All you need to do is to jump through the hole and you will land in the world outside.'
Alice was all excited,
'I want to jump through right now. '
The Rabbit pricked up his ears,
' WAIT ! You can't leave us. Who will look after us ? Without your love, the world wide web would collapse. Everybody uses us, but no one cares for us. Oh Alice, we need someone to look after us. You can not go.'
Alice started to cry a curtain of tears.
Harry looked at Alice,
'I will wait and look after the world wide web till you come back.'
Alice cried even more. But this time, they were tears of joy !
Harry looked at Alice. He found her really attractive. He was scared to admit it even to himself, that he was in love. He couldn't keep his eyes away from her.

Alice turned red,
' What are you looking at ?!'

Harry was caught unaware, but managed to catch his breath, ' I was wondering what you were holding.'
Alice couldn't turn more red than she was,
' It is just a piece of paper with a small note that I have written to you. '
And she dropped the paper she had written the note on.

It gently tumbled downwards as Harry kept his eyes on it.

And it landed softly on the grass.

Harry picked up the note that Alice had dropped.
As he read the note, Alice kissed him and went towards the hole leading to the world outside.

But just before stepping into the hole, she stopped, 'Harry I can't do this. I will miss you too much.'
Harry hugged her,
'You need to go. You need to fulfil your dream of seeing the other world. As long as you write to me, I will be happy.'
'But how can I write to you Harry, and how will you write back to me ?', Alice wondered.
The Rabbit , who was quiet all this time, hopped near them and said,
'I have sorted it all out. In the world outside, there are computers everywhere.'
He hopped to Alice's shoulder,
'Whenever you feel lonely Alice, just get to any computer, and type,
www.harryinwonderland.com
When you type that in, you will be taken to page with me in it. Click on me and you will be able to write to Harry.
Alice squeezed the Rabbit (fortunately he could still breathe) ,'Promise you will be there to take messages to Harry? '
Relieved that Alice had now let go, he caught his breadth,
' A Rabbit NEVER breaks his promise. I promise to keep the promise. I will be there till you come back.'
The rabbit jumped to the edge of the hole, taking care not fall though,
' Alice, it is time for you to jump into the hole to visit the other side.'
Alice was ready to go and visit the world outside the world wide web. She gave one last hug and kiss to Harry and whispered,
'I promise that I will write, so don't be lonely. In fact, to keep you happy till I comeback, I am going to ask the whole world to write to you.'
To remember the words she needed to type , she sang ' harry in wonderland .com ...harry in wonderland .com .... ', and jumped into the hole.
